在凋亡信号刺激下，线粒体蛋白释放到细胞质中，激活依赖和依赖非凋亡细胞死亡通路。细胞色素 c 诱导凋亡体形成，AIF 和核酸内切酶 G 在依赖和非依赖凋亡的核 DNA 损伤中发挥作用。Smac/DIABLO 和 HtrA2/OMI 促进两种依赖和非依赖凋亡的细胞毒性（Saelens 等，2004）。

Apoptotic factor-mediated response In response to apoptotic signals, mitochondrial proteins are released into the cytosol and activate both caspase-dependent and -independent cell death pathways. Cytochrome c induces apoptosome formation, AIF and endonuclease G function in caspase independent apoptotic nuclear DNA damage. Smac/DIABLO and HtrA2/OMI promote both caspase activation and caspase-independent cytotoxicity (Saelens et al., 2004).
