Tolerance of reactive oxygen produced by macrophages The expression of AhpC in Mycobacteria does not correlate with virulence; instead, the most important parts of the antioxidant system in Mtb appear to be the lipid cell wall, the enzymes SodB/SodC (superoxide dismutases), and the catalase/peroxidase KatG. Together with the enzyme system that acts on nitrosative stress and the sequestration of iron, these appear to be critical in defending against the macrophage's production of ROS/RNS, and enable the bacterium to exist in the phagosome for extended periods (Zahrt & Deretic 2002).
