Inhibition of Host mRNA Processing and RNA Silencing The Influenza Virus NS1 protein inhibits the cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor CPSF and the PABII components of the host cell 3' end processing machinery, preventing efficient 3' end processing of host pre-mRNAs. NS1 also inhibits the splicing of pre-mRNAs, resulting in their retention within the host cell nucleus.
