神经营养因子的功能是通过其分泌的神经营养因子同源二聚体与其共同神经营养受体 p75NTR 以及其配体 tropomyosin related kinase (TRK) 受体的结合来介导的。NGF 结合 TRKA，BDNF 结合 TRKB，NT3 结合 TRKC。也可能形成三元分子信号复合物（NGF-p75NTR-TRKA）。

TRKA activation by NGF Neurotrophin functions are mediated by binding of the secreted neurotrophin homodimers to their common neurotrophin receptor p75NTR, and to their cognate tropomyosin related kinase (TRK) receptor. NGF binds to TRKA, BDNF and NT4 bind to TRKB, NT3 binds to TRKC. A tri-molecular signalling complex (NGF-p75NTR-TRKA) might also be possible.
