人类中降解的大部分血红素来自血红蛋白。每天约有6-8克血红蛋白降解,相当于每天约300毫克血红素。血红素不循环,必须降解并排出体外,但铁得以保留。血红素降解涉及两个步骤:1. 由微溶血红素氧合酶裂解血红素环产生胆绿素;2. 胆绿素被还原为胆红素。胆红素可与葡萄糖醛酸结合并排出。

Heme degradation Most of the heme degraded in humans comes from hemoglobin. Approximately 6-8 grams of hemoglobin is degraded daily which is equivalent to approximately 300 milligrams of heme per day. Heme is not recycled so it must be degraded and excreted. The iron, however, is conserved. There are two steps to heme degradation;
1. cleavage of the heme ring by a microsomal heme oxygenase producing biliverdin
2. biliverdin is reduced to bilirubin.
Bilirubin can then be conjugated with glucuronic acid and excreted.
