肝素硫酸酯 (HS) 和肝素 (有时统称为 HS-GAG) 链由变异的硫酸化重复二糖单位肝素 (Ido-GlcNAc) 或肝素硫酸 (GlcA-GlcNAc) 组成。肝素仅在肥大细胞中产生,而 HS 几乎由体内所有类型的细胞产生。随着链长度的增加,多糖可发生修饰,如葡萄糖醛酸的异头化形成 Id 醛酸,以及 GlcNAc 的去乙酰化和硫酸化,形成硫酸化的葡萄糖胺 (Stringer & Gallagher 1997, Sasisekharan & Venkataraman 2000)。

HS-GAG biosynthesis Heparan sulfate (HS) and heparin (sometimes collectively called HS-GAG) chains consist of the variably sulfated repeating disaccharide units heparan (Ido-GlcNAc) or heparosan (GlcA-GlcNAc). Heparin is exclusively made in mast cells whereas HS is made by virtually every type of cell in the body. As the chain length increases, the polysaccharides can undergo modifications such as epimerisation of glucuronic acid to iduronic acid and deacetylation and sulfation of GlcNAc to form sulfated glucosamine (Stringer & Gallagher 1997, Sasisekharan & Venkataraman 2000).
