多种 CYP 参与胆固醇的生物合成和消除，因此在维持胆固醇稳态方面发挥重要作用。在正常的生理条件下，胆固醇的摄入（来自饮食或从头合成）等于胆固醇的消除（降解为胆汁酸，随胆汁排出，并用于合成类固醇激素）。这些过程受到严格的调控，任何破坏都会导致胆固醇水平升高，从而引发心血管疾病。参与胆固醇稳态的 CYP 可能是胆固醇降低药物的潜在靶点。
