Zinc efflux and compartmentalization by the SLC30 family The human SLC30 gene family of solute carriers is thought to participate in the homeostasis of zinc ions and facilitate zinc transport into specialized compartments of the cell such as endosomes, golgi network and synaptic vesicles. There are 10 members of this family, named ZnT1-10. ZnT4, ZnT9 and ZnT10 have no function determined as of yet (Palmiter RD and Huang L, 2004).
