胆碱是人体必需的水溶性营养素，作为磷脂的前体和乙酰胆碱神经递质。它通常与基于其化学结构的 B 维生素相关联，但它不是正式的 B 维生素。其氧化为胆碱能（betaine）与叶酸依赖性的一碳代谢有关，其中胆碱能是甲硫氨酸循环中的甲基供体。胆碱能进一步代谢为二甲基甘氨酸，由肾脏清除（Ueland 2011, Hollenbeck 2012）。

Choline catabolism Choline is an essential water-soluble nutrient in humans, serving as a precursor of phospholipids and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is often associated with B vitamins based on its chemical structure but it isn't an official B vitamin. Its oxidation to betaine provides a link to folate-dependent, one-carbon metabolism where betaine is a methyl donor in the methionine cycle. Betaine is further metabolised to dimethylglycine which is cleared by the kidney (Ueland 2011, Hollenbeck 2012).
