肠杆菌素是铁亲和力最高的螯合剂。它是肠杆菌中用于铁利用的主要化合物，但也由其他一些生物使用。在感染期间，宿主通过使用宿主螯合剂限制游离铁，但肠杆菌素能够从这些复合物中窃取铁，因为其亲和力更高（Miethke & Marahiel 2007, Barber & Elde 2015）。
英文描述
Iron assimilation using enterobactin Enterobactin is the siderophore with the highest affinity for iron. It is the main compound in enterobacteria used for iron assimilation, but also by some other organisms. During infection the host restricts free iron by using host siderophores, but enterobactin is able to steal iron from these complexes because of higher affinity (Miethke & Marahiel 2007, Barber & Elde 2015).
