Dengue virus modulates apoptosis Apoptosis of cells during Dengue virus infection facilitates virus proliferation and enhances hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and shock syndrome. Apoptosis was demonstrated in liver, brain, intestinal and lung tissues (Limonta et al., 2007). It is known that the C protein and the NS2B:NS3 complex enhance apoptosis by binding to host factors. On the other hand, early apoptosis of an infected cell is inhibited by NS1, through maintaining autophagy, to allow replication and assembly (Lu et al., 2020; reviewed in Amara & Mercer, 2015).
