Biofilm formation Irreversible attachment of E.coli to host and other surfaces is the prerequisite for the change of the motile to a sedentary phenotype. This in turn is followed by the production of a complex mature biofilm, resulting in increased resistance towards host defenses and antimicrobial agents. In the last stage, biofilms support the release of new motile bacteria. The biofilm matrix mainly consists of polysaccharides like cellulose and colanic acid, held together by specific adhesins like curlin and Ag43 (reviewed by Van Houdt & Michiels, 2005; Laverty et al., 2014; Rossi et al., 2017).
