Formation of the non-canonical BAF (ncBAF) complex A non-canonical form of the BAF complex (ncBAF) was identified in mammalian cells by gradient sedimentation and by IP-mass spectrometry studies against SMARCA4 or BRD9 (Alpsoy and Dykhuizen, 2018; Gatchalian et al, 2018; Mashtalir et al, 2018; Mashtalir et al, 2020; Michel et al, 2018; reviewed in Innis and Cabot, 2020). Unlike cBAF and pBAF, ncBAF does not contain SMARCE1 or SMARCB1, nor does it contain ARID1A/ARID1B, ARID2 or any BAF45/DPF family member; ncBAF is characterized by inclusion of complex-specific subunits BIRCA or BICRAL (also known as GLTSCR1 and GLTSCR1L, respectively) and BRD9 (Alpsoy and Dykhuizen, 2018; Gatchalian et al, 2018; Mashtalir et al, 2018; Mashtalir et al, 2020; Michel et al, 2018). ncBAF localizes to CTCF binding sites and plays a role in prostate cancer, synovial sarcomas, some leukemias and and rhabdoid tumors (Michel et al, 2018; Alpsoy and Dykhuizen, 2018; Hohmann et al, 2015; reviewed in Innis and Cabot, 2020).
