Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism encompasses biosynthesis of vitamin C from D-glucuronic acid via the uronic acid pathway (present in most species but absent in primates due to an inactive GULO gene), as well as degradation pathways for ascorbate and related polyols such as L-gulonate.
