Fatty acid beta-oxidation breaks down long-chain fatty acids into two-carbon units of acetyl-CoA through a cyclic four-step process involving activation, transport via the carnitine shuttle, oxidation by acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, hydration, and thiolysis. It occurs in both mitochondrial matrix for most chain lengths and peroxisomes for very-long-chain fatty acids.
