Oxidative phosphorylation couples electron transfer from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen through the mitochondrial respiratory chain (Complexes I–IV) with ATP synthesis via Complex V (ATP synthase). Electrons flow via ubiquinone and cytochrome c, creating a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane that drives ADP phosphorylation.
