Arginine biosynthesis produces arginine from glutamate in bacteria via ornithine and citrulline intermediates (the ODC pathway). In mammals, arginine is conditionally essential; the urea cycle interconverts ornithine, citrulline, and arginine for nitrogen disposal while synthesizing nitric oxide as a signaling molecule.
