Alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism interconvert these amino acids with TCA cycle intermediates (pyruvate, oxaloacetate, alpha-ketoglutarate) via transamination. The alanine cycle transports nitrogen from muscle to liver; the malate-aspartate shuttle transfers reducing equivalents into mitochondria.
