Valine, leucine, and isoleucine (branched-chain amino acids) degradation requires a common first step catalyzed by branched-chain amino acid transaminase followed by irreversible oxidative decarboxylation via the BCKD complex. Deficiency causes maple syrup urine disease with neurotoxic accumulation.
