Phenylalanine metabolism converts essential aromatic amino acid phenylalanine into tyrosine via phenylalanine hydroxylase; defects cause phenylketonuria (PKU). Phenylalanine feeds the aromatic amino acid catabolic pathway through homogentisate to fumarate and acetoacetate.
